The Thursday Quiz IV

Hi Kids! Time once again for

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is, as always, a "Is It or Isn't It" game. From the list of twelve items, your job is to determine whether each IS or ISN'T in the week's category.

Remember always the central tenet of Judeo-Christian ethics:

No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. The Thursday Quiz is a POP quiz. Violators will be subject to gnawing guilt that will eat at them and eat at them and eat at them.

This Week's Category is gonna get cartographic on you:

The Countries of Africa

Bring it!

1. Benin
2. Brunei
3. Burundi
4. Central African Republic
5. Kuala Lampur
6. Laos
7. Lesotho
8. Luanda
9. Malawi
10. Mauritania
11. Mombossa
12. Talkeetna

Keeping in mind that it is supposed to be challenging, and that you aren't expected to get them all right, hold your chin high and submit your answers as a comment.

Dang! I have actually been studying Africa, but I've only covered the north and a little of the north east.

1 is
2 isn't
3 isn't
4 is (I feel like this is a trick question... it seems too obvious, but if I miss it I'll feel like a moron)
5 isn't
6 isn't

8 isn't
9 isn't
10 is
11 isn't
12 isn't

Although I'm sure one of those last two is some sneaky little johnny-come-lately country I've never heard of...

Ok, I'm plunging in on the quiz with my head high.

I'm claiming the following as African countries:

3. Burundi
4. CAR
7. Lesotho
9. Malawi

Now I have to click send before I start over thinking and doubting myself. And you, for appearing to have such a high ratio of no to yes.

You know, it's so hard to refrain from reading all the comments on the left-hand screen I should get an extra point or two for being so late. . .
OK, I'm saying yes to 1,3,4, 7, and 10.
2 Brunei--that's a country, but isn't it technically in Asia? maybe?
5 KL is in Malaysia
6 Laos, that's crazy talk
7 Malawi. No. Man, not country. Or am I just thinking of Zarkawi?
11 Mombassa. That's the capital of Out of Africa. Not country.
12 Talkeetna. AK!
God, I hope this doesn't anull our marriage if I really screwed up.

Oh, I forgot 8, Luanda--I think maybe I redesigned her kitchen a few years back. . .

Poor forgotten Malawi. I've done you wrong.

Well played my friends!

OK, Brunei is a country on Borneo and Laos is a country in Southeast Asia. Kuala Lampur is the capital of Malaysia.

Luanda is the capital of Angola. Mombossa is a misspelling of Mombasa, an Indian Ocean port in Tanzania. Talkeetna is a village in Alaska.

I am totally impressed with the performances this week. I thought it would be a killer, but we have no fewer than five perfect scores.

Karin takes the gold star.

Austin takes the silver.

Rex gets the blue.

MyDog and Chuckdaddy get accolades and a copy of our home game. And kudos.

Actually, kudos all around!

Point of order: Karin nailed the quiz immediately after I posted it at approximately 11:53 p.m. PDT. It was not yet Thursday.

A special executive session of the board was called, and after lengthy debate it was determined that the quiz is "live" as soon as it is posted, whether or not midnight has been reached on the West Coast. So now that's cleared up.

@Rebel: Yes, the C.A.R. was my favorite one on this list. It's so obviously an African country name that it couldn't possibly be an African country name.... could it?

@Sandy: Well done. This was actually the first Quiz with 6 is and 6 isn't on the list. I'm sneaky.

@iphi: Welcome aboard the quiz! And good to hear from you, stranger. An admirable debut.

@Mrs.5000: I, too, hope this doesn't anull our marriage. You did miss Malawi, however, my love. If it makes you feel any better, I once caught a certain African human rights leader of our mutual acquaintance missing Malawi on an African map quiz. Malawi gets no respect.

@mydog: Well done! I wish I had more virtual stars....

@chuck: You too, Chuck.

@brazilian: Good evening and welcome to the quiz! Let us not quibble, but I would submit that "Mombossa" is every bit as much not an African country as "Mombasa" isn't.

Thank you all for playing -- you make this simple blogger very happy.

Lame! Virtual stars do NOT run out! I actually thought I'd failed the quiz because I wasn't mentioned in the follow-up post. I was like, "REALLY?!?!?!? I so KNEW those!" I didn't realize that quiz quickness counted.

The funnest part of these must be coming up with the "no" options.

I know that you know that I know these. Heck, I think I could still fill out one of those Africa base maps circa 1988. But I won't burden your blog with a seven-days-late entry. I'll try to check in on the next Thursday quiz more promptly!

Here's a countries of Africa quiz of a different sort.

@mark:

1. Damn Straight.

2. I DO know that you know these. But I can't give you a star for that.

3. Excellent. Here's yet another, by my personal acquaintance "Professor Melonhead": http://www.professormelonhead.com/Map_Africa.html
