The Thursday Quiz XI

It's America's favorite weekly test of knowledge! It's

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is, as always, a "Is It or Isn't It" game. From the list of twelve items, your job is to determine whether each IS or ISN'T a true example of the week's category.

Remember always the fundimental presupposition of international law:

No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. The Thursday
Quiz is a POP quiz. Violators will be tried at The Hague.
This Week's Category will lure you off the farm with cultural and economic opportunities!

Really Big Cities

All of the following cities are in the world's largest 100. But, have I listed them in the right country? Aye, there's the rub.

1. Algiers, Libya
2. Casablanca, Portugal
3. Dhaka, China
4. Fortaleza, Brazil
5. Haerbin, China
6. Karachi, Pakistan
7. Khartoum, Sudan
8. Kinshasa, D.R. Congo (Zaire)
9. Lagos, Indonesia
10. Pune, India
11. Riyadh, Iran
12. Sao Paulo, Honduras

Submit your urbane answers in the form of a comment.

Ok... here's my belated entry for "Dorkfest 2007": I was lying in bed, about to drift off into peacefull slumber when suddenly I woke with a start thinking "OMG! The Thursday Quiz!!!" And actually got up to check it out.

But my first thought when I saw the topic was fuck it- I'm going to bed. But while I'm up.

1. is
2 isn't
3 is
4 is
5 isn't
6 is

Good night all.

Given that your question simply asks if you have listed them in the right country, the correct answer is simply "no."

From another perspective -- I don't know which country you were in when you listed them, or what criteria are used to ascertain whether that country is right or not, I'm not sure the question can be answered...

@Nathan: No no no no no! You've got it all wrong. The point is not to apply machine logic to the host's grammar! The point is to challenge and celebrate your knowledge in an upbeat, joyful pop-quiz environment!

Well done. Those of you who struggled with this one still got a hell of a lot more answers right than the people who were too chicken to show up. Know what I'm sayin'?

1. Algiers, Libya: Nope. It's in Algeria.
2. Casablanca, Portugal: Nope. It's in Morocco.
3. Dhaka, China: Nope. It's in Bangladesh.
4. Fortaleza, Brazil: Yep.
5. Haerbin, China: Yep.

Congrats to Blythe for the gold -- first people to collect a third gold star.

Congrats to fingers for the silver, her highest place to date.

Congrats to Karin, who takes home her second blue.

Congrats to Rex, who completes his suite of stars with his first green.

Props to g, the Mrs., and [Cherry], runners up with 10/12 apiece.

Damn, I must have missed the quiz deadline by like, minutes. Maybe some other time. The fact that Thursday quizzes don't happen when it's Thursday where I am always throws me off a bit.

Heatherbee said...

Or maybe you've had daylight savings by now? No one tells us this stuff here...

I know I am waaaay late, but I am just back from a conference at which no time was set aside for Thursday Quizzes or the like. I thought I would skip the quiz, but I cannot resist the topic.

1. Algiers, Libya -- ISN'T (Algeria)
2. Casablanca, Portugal -- ISN'T (Morocco)
3. Dhaka, China -- ISN'T. Having trouble remembering the actual country though. Maybe Ghana?
4. Fortaleza, Brazil -- IS. I am guessing here... but it sounds vaguely like it could be a Portugese name.
5. Haerbin, China -- IS. Or I'll say is despite what I think is a mispelling of Harbin. If I remember right, Harbin is the capitol of Heilongjiang (if I am spelling that correctly), within the region of Manchuria. Yes, I did study some Chinese history in college, and yes I am showing off. What that's what the blogosphere is for, right?
6. Karachi, Pakistan -- IS.
7. Khartoum, Sudan -- IS.
8. Kinshasa, D.R. Congo (Zaire) -- IS.
9. Lagos, Indonesia -- ISN'T. Nigeria, actually.
10. Pune, India -- IS. I have not heard of it so I'm guessing.
11. Riyadh, Iran -- ISN'T. I think it's Saudi Arabia. Might even be the capital (Mecca is not, I am pretty sure.)
12. Sao Paulo, Honduras -- ISN'T. Brazil.
