Caillebotte because PARIS!!

But I get a kick out of the guy with leaves on his head, and expression on the face of the one poking Jesus (which by the way, ick).

Probably getting kicked out of the art historians union, but...Caillebotte.

Caillebotte, easily.

Yeah, I agree with everyone else so far. Caillebotte. It's that one of the floor scrapers. That might be my favorite painting of the whole tournament so far.

Hmmm, the new pair of top paintings certainly aren't kind to Caravaggio--one of Caillebotte's best v. one of Caravaggio's fruitiest. I will mentally substitute in Conversion of Saint Paul, and vote for the lurid theatrics of Caravaggio over the placid scenes of Caillebotte.

Why do all of the Cs have to be so good? This is incredibly difficult - both of these are artists that I have told myself would stay in the left bracket for a long time - and now one of them must go.

My initial instinct was to vote Caravaggio - all of his paintings are interesting and vibrant, whereas Caillebotte's appeal comes from making somewhat dull scenarios appear interesting. However, the mechanism with which Gustave does so, which is his amazing use of color and perspective, is what puts him above Caravaggio's exciting but flat and colorless paintings. Although I feel that I should note that both of these pull off lighting very well - kudos to both!

My vote goes to Caillebotte.

Caillebotte is really awesome, but I'll vote for Caravaggio. I'm not a super-fan of realistic painting, but he's a level above.

The floor scrapper is very nice, and I like Caillebotte a lot, but I will say Caravaggio. It's the expressions, I think. I can't help but make up new...interpretations? St. Peter saying "hey guys, you know, on second thought..." Or the finger guy, "Jesus, you're right, you are made of plush!"

I find myself kind of rooting for Cailebotte here. I kind of like the idea that this wealthy guy, mostly dismissed as a supporter of the arts and not up to his peers' skills, wasn't really discovered until the 1950s. And here he is possibly making it to round 5? Rich kid makes good!

But I like Caravaggio a significant bit more. That wacky new first painting withstanding, I find his dark realism stunning and have a hard time seeing him ever not getting my vote.

I mean onto round 4. Ouch, my second bracket mistake in a week. Maybe the pressure of Vice-dorkness is getting to me...

Just relax into it, Chuckdaddy. You're doing great.

Here's a vote-by-email: "I'll take this opportunity to vote for Caravaggio again, tho I just hate to diss Caillebotte, whom I like very much. But I have to stick with Caravaggio. And I love the epicene Bacchus."

For me: Caillebotte continues to impress. But, Caravaggio.

Caillebotte is a new name to me but I like his work a great deal. There was so little in this for me that I had to go and look at other work. My vote goes to Caravaggio because he depicts facial expressions really well whereas Caillebotte almost seems to avoid painting faces altogether...

Looking at Caillebotte's paintings knocks the breath out of me, I like them that much. That makes it pretty lame that I can never remember his name and resort to googling things like "painting floor scrapers" or "French painting watering workers." (If you ever find yourself in similar straits, I recommend the former.)

And there was somebody else--Oh! Caravaggio! Yeah, I like him a lot, too! (Seriously, I do--just not quite as much.)

Caravaggio! He kindof reminds me of a Rennaissance Norman Rockwell!

Yikes, it's our first Third Round tie, as two artists that everybody seems to like grind it out to a 7-7 standoff. Well, maybe the next R3 tie will be between two artists we're all lukewarm about, and both of these heavy hitters will be able to play through. Or maybe not!

But for now, voting is closed in this round. You can always return to this page and look at the pretty pretty pictures, though.
